REFLECTIONS FROM MY PAST 20 YEARS

MY FAMILY MOVED TO KERNERSVILLE IN EARLY 1973. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING WE DEVELOPED A SPECIAL WARMTH FOR THE TOWN AND MOST ESPECIALLY THE CONGREGATION AT THE CATHOLIC MISSION IN THE OLE ANTIQUE SHOP. IT WAS VERY INFORMAL AND EVERYONE QUITE FRIENDLY. DURING MASS THE COFFEE POT WAS ALWAYS PERKING AND ITS AROMA WAS EVIDENT THROUGHOUT THE BULIDING. AFTER MASS, CHILDREN WENT TO CCD CLASSES, THE ADULTS REMAINED TOGETHER FOR FELLOWSHIP, AND MOST ALWAYS, ADULT RELIGIOUS DISCUSSION WITH DIRECTION AND GUIDANCE FROM THE PASTOR. ALL IN ATTENDANCE WERE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS.

I WAS ASKED TO ORGANIZE THE USHERS AND LECTORS AND ASSIST AS THE SACRISTANT. AT THAT TIME THERE WERE SLIGHTLY OVER 100 FAMILIES ANO FINDING WILLINGNESS AND TALENT WAS A CHALLENGE. AT THE START, I FOUND ONLY ONE USHER FOR SATURDAY MASS AND I WAS THE "OTHER" MAN. LECTORS WERE ALSO IN SHORT SUPPLY AND I FREQUENTLY FOUND MYSELF SUBBING FOR SOMEONE WHO COULD NOT MAKE IT ON SCHEDULE. I ATTENDED ALL MASSES TO INSURE COORDINATION AND ASSIST IN THE LITURGY.

AS THE PARISH GREW THE NEED FOR A NEW CHURCH BECAME EVICENT. AT THE DEDICATION IN OCTOBER OF 78, PARISHIONERS, VIITORS AND NOTABLES WERE ALL IN ATTENDANCE. IT WAS A "GOOSE BUMPS" ATMOSPHERE. THERE WAS SO MUCH PRIDE AND EMOTION AT THE WORK THAT WE HAO ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER ALL. OTHER THAN THE ACTUAL BUILDING  CONSTRUCTION. PARISHIONERS OID THE LANDSCAPING, PAINTING, CARPENTRY, TILING, DECORATING, 8UILT THE ALTAR AND PODIUM, HUNG CABINETS, REDID THE BISHOPS CHAIR WITH NEEDLEPOINT, AND WITH SPECIAL MEMORIAL DONATIONS HAD RUGS INSTALLED.

SOON THERE WERE MORE MASSES, LARGER ATTENDANCE AND THE NEED FOR MORE USHERS AND LECTORS. SUCCESSFUL RECRUITING AND TREMENDOUS INPUT FROM DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS FILLED THE NEED. TODAY THERE ARE OVER 100 USHERS, 50 OF WHICH ARE WOMEN, OUR FIRST LADY USHER WAS MRS. MARY JONES. WE NOW HAVE 40 LECTORS. ALONG WITH THIS LABOR OF LOVE, I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND SERVE WITH MANY WONDERFUL MEN, WOMEN AND YOUNG PEOPLE.

DURING THESE PAST 20 YEARS I HAVE SERVED ON THE PARISH BOARD, WORKED IN THE HOLY CROSS BOOTH AT THE DIXIE CLASSIC FAIR , ACTIVELY WORKED WITH THE MEN'S CLUB IN PROJECTS IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH, ASSISTED THE WOMENS CLUB WITH DINNERS AT THE PADDISON LIBRARY AND SERVED AS AN OFFICER AND CHARTER MEMBER OF OUR KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS .

TO PARTICIPATE IN EVERY ONE OF THESE ENDEAVORS REQUIRED TIME, EFFORT AND DEDICATION. BUT MOST IMPORTANT WERE THE REWARDS THAT IN EVERY CASE EXCEEDED THE DEMANDS AND THERE IS A LONG LASTING FEELING OF PRIDE AND ACCOMPLISHMENT.

MY SONS GLENN AND DAVID BOTH SERVED AS ALTAR BOYS HERE AT HOLY CROSS. GLENN WAS THE FIRST EAGLE SCOUT AT HOLY CROSS EARNING 136 MERIT BADGES. HE WAS ALSO THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE AD ALTARE DEI MEDAL!N SCOUTING.
