The Holy Cross Bishop's Chair

In the early 1980s it was decided by Carol Royals and Joan Austin that Holy Cross needed a Bishop's Chair for our first church on Cherry Street, Kernersville, NC. Carol who was into antiques in "a big way" started looking in shops for a chair to fit our needs.

She found one and bought it, had it refinished, and then I set about making the covering for the seat and back.  I did the needlepoint using the emblem of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales representing the order of our pastor. The chair remained on our altar beneath the large stained glass window for twenty or so years.

Then one day it disappeared; we did not know where it was. Later it was located in storage, not to be used, so it was moved to Jefferson, NC. In time it was brought back to Holy Cross; the wood was restored to walnut finish, and the seat and back covering were cleaned; new filling was added and it looked like new! Today it graces the altar of our church, is used at every mass, and is appreciated by all who see and use it.

We expect it will serve for many years to come.
