REFLECTIONS OF

CECILE LYNCH

1993

THIS TRIBUTE, TO A REMARKABLE LADY, WILL NOT BE FILLED WITH TIMES AND DATES BUT WITH WONDERFUL MEMORIES GLEANED FROM PEOPLE WHO'VE KNOWN HER A LONG TIME.

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CHANGES AT HOLY CROSS DURING THE LAST TWENTY YEARS; THE PLACE OF WORSHIP, NEW PASTORS, PADDED CHURCH PEWS, NEW LIGHTS, CARPETS, STATUES, PICTURES BUT THE ONE CONSTANT IMAGE I WILL TELL YOU A BOUT IS CECILE LYNCH, "MRS. HOLY CROSS".

COMING TO THIS AREA SOME FORTY YEARS AGO, CECILE WAS AN INTEGRAL FIGURE WHEN THE CHURCH WAS A MISSION. I UNDERSTAND SHE DID EVERYTHING INCLUDING KEEPING BOOKS FOR FR. PHARR, TAKING CARE OF THE ALTAR LINENS, AND MANY OTHER DUTIES. WHEN FR. BOLICH WAS PASTOR SHE EVEN INHERITED HIS DOG WHEN HE ACQUIRED A DOBERMAN.

ABOUT TWELVE YEARS AGO, A GROUP OF WOMEN FROM CHURCH STARTED THE QUILTERS. CECILE WAS AMONG THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS. HER PERFECT STITCHERY AND EYE FOR COLOR MADE THE HOLY CROSS QUILTS QUITE ENVIABLE. TO VISIT HER HOME, YOU WILL REALIZE HER KNOWLEDGE OF COLOR COMES FROM THE FACT THAT SHE IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST. SOME OF US HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO RECEIVE A HANDMADE GIFT FROM HER. SHE WAS MY SECRET PAL ONE YEAR !N THE QUILTERS AND I PRIZE A MINIATURE CROSS-SITCHED MADONNA AND CHILD SHE GAVE ME.

CECILE IS FRENCH  BORN AND RAISED IN CANADA , THE OLDEST OF A LARGE FAMILY. HER PARENTS DIED VERY YOUNG AND CECLE MANAGED TO RAISE THESE SIBLINGS WHILE WORKING TO SUPPORT THEM. THIS SHE NEYER REGRETS. I KNOW OF TWO SISTERS, ONE FROM CANADA AND ONE LIVING IN FLORIDA, WHO COME TO VISIT HER.

EVENTUALLY, CECILE MARRIED TOMMY LYNCH, WHO WAS A PARTNER IN A HOSIERY MANUFACTURING BUSINESS. AT SOMETIME IN THEIR LIFE, THEY OPENED A PLANT IN GUATEMALA. CECILE TALKS FREQUENTLY ABOUT THEIR LIFE THERE. WHEN THEY SETTLED IN KERNERSVI LLE, TOMMY WORKED FOR MANY YEARS AT CRAWFORD MILL ON MAIN ST. HER BELOVED TOMMY DIED IN 1974 AND MRS. LYNCH STILL LIVES IN THEIR HOME ON MAIN ST. WITHIN A BLOCK OF THE MILL.

NEVER HAVING CHILDREN OF HER OWN, CECILE IS VERY ATTRACTED TO THE YOUNGSTERS AT HOLY CROSS, GENERALLY PLANTING A KISS WITH HER FINGER ON THEIR NOSE. SHE ALSO HAS AGREAT LOVE FOR ANIMALS, BIRDS IN PARTICULAR. HER GROCERY CART USUALLY HAS A BAG OF BIRD SEED IN IT.

THREE YEARS AGO, SEPTEMBER 17TH, CECILE WAS HONORED WITH A GALA 8OTH BIRTHDAY PARTY, ATTENDED BY HER MANY FRIENDS. EACH WAS ASKED TO TELL WHY CECILE MEANT SO MUCH TO THEM. IT WAS IMPRESSIVE AND BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES TO HER OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS SHE HAD DONE FOR SO MANY PEOPLE.

MANY OF OUR NEW PARISHIONERS MAY NOT BE AWARE OF HOW MUCH HOLY CROSS IS INDEBTED TO THAT LOVELY LADY WHO SITS UP FRONT AT MASS. SHE IS FAITHFUL AT All OUR SPECIAL SERVICES. YOU MIGHT ALSO SEE HER WALKING ALONG MAIN ST. GOING TO HER FAVORITE FAST FOOD OR WITH HER CART GOING TO THE STORE. TIME WAS WHEN SHE WOULD NOT ACCEPT A RIDE, HOWEVER THE DISTANCE SEEMS A BIT LONGER NOW, SO STOP AND OFFER THAT RIDE. SHE JUST MIGHT SAY "YES".
