"WHAT ARE YOU DRAWING?", A MOTHER ASKED HER FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. "I'M DRAWING A PICTURE OF GOO", SHE REPLIED. "BUT DEAR", HER MOTHER SAID, "NO ONE KNOWS WHAT GOD LOOKS LIKE." THE LITTLE GIRL ANSWERED "THEY WILL WHEN I'VE FINISHED MY PICTURE. "

OVER THE PAST 24 YEARS (4 YEARS AS A MISSION OF ST. BENEDICT THE MOOR AND NOW 20 YEARS AS HOLY CROSS CHURCH), I HAVE SEEN THE FACE OF GOD IN MANY OF MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS. BUT MORE THAN THAT, I HAVE SEEN HIS HAND AT WORK, GIVING US WHAT WE NEEDED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT ALWAYS WHAT WE WANTED.

WHEN A GROUP  OF FAMILIES MET WITH MSGR. BILL PHARR IN 1969, I DOUBT THAT ANY OF US ENVISIONED THE GROWTH THAT WE HAVE HAD. WE WERE SMALL AT FIRST, (61 SIGNED THE PETITION TO BISHOP BEGLEY TO BECOME A CHURCH, OF WHICH 41 WERE CHILDREN), BUT THAT IS WHAT ALSO ALLOWED US TO BECOME A FAMI LY. I LOOK BACK ANO SEE A REPLICA OF THE EARLY CHRISTIANS COMING TOGETHER AND LEARNING TO LOVE GOD AND EACH OTHER.

AS WE GREW, WE TRIED TO KEEP THAT CLOSENESS AND PEOPLE LIKE BILL GERICHTEN HELPED IMMENSELY. BEFORE BILL WE HAD GEORGE KETLER-(GOD REST H I S   SOUL ) ,  A SIX FOOT 2 INCH KOJAK LOOK-A-LIKE, WHO LOVED EVERYONE AND IT SHOWED. I COULD NAME A LOT MORE PEOPLE WITHOUT WHOM HOLY CROSS WOULD NOT BE WHAT IT IS TODAY BUT THE LIST IS TOO LONG.

WHEN THE LORD CALLED ME TO THE DlACONATE 8 YEARS AGO, THE THREE YEARS OF STUDY AND TRAVELING WEEKENDS TO CHARLOTTE SEEMED TOO MUCH, BUT NOW AFTER BEING ORDAINED FOR 5 YEARS, IT NOW SEEMS SO LITTLE.

THERE IS SO MUCH MORE I WOULD LIK E TO SAY, BUT TO SAVE A  FEW  TREES, LET ME THANK EACH OF OUR PARISHIONERS, PAST AND PRESENT, FOR ALL YOU HAVE AND WILL DO TO ALLOW OTHERS TO SEE THE FACE OF GOD.
