THE QUILTERS

1993

IN THE FALL OF 1982 TEN WOMEN OF THE PARISH MET TO FORM A QUILTING GROUP. TODAY, WE NUMBER EIGHTEEN, WITH SIX OF THE GRASS ROOTS STILL STITCHING. WE ARE QUITE A MIXTURE. OUR SENIOR MEMBER WILL BE 83 IN SEPTEMBER, AND OUR YOUNGEST-WHO KNOWS? THREE OF OUR GIRLS ARE FROM HOLLAND, ONE FROM IRELAND, ONE FROM FRANCE, ONE FROM ITALY AND ONE FROM CANADA. WE ARE SHORT, TALL, FAT, THIN ANO SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN. ONE OF OUR MEMBERS WAS HESITANT TO JOIN THE GROUP A FEW YEARS AGO -SHE DIDN'T WANT TO BE WITH A LOT OF "OLD LADIES". SHE IS NOW ONE OF OUR BUSIEST MEMBERS - AND THE THIRD OLDEST IN THE GANG.

WE HAVE BEEN QUITE MOBILE HAVING BEEN THROWN OUT OF SO MANY PLACES! WE STARTED IN WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL GARAGE OF THE PLAYSCHOOL BUILDING. WHEN FR. HARRY MOVED WE MET IN THE MAIN HOUSE OF THAT BUILDING. FROM THERE WE HAD NICE QUARTERS IN THE DOUBLE ROOMS OFF THE COMMONS (EASY ACCESS TO THE NICE KITCHEN) THEN WE WERE MOVED BACK TO THE OLD GARAGE! WHEN THE LITTLE PEOPLE TOOK OVER THAT ENTIRE BUILDING WE LANDED IN THE ACTIVITY HOUSE ANO THAT IS OUR PRESENT LOCATION. SOMETIMES IT HASN'T BEEN EASY! WE ALL HOPE ONE OF US WILL WIN A SWEEPSTAKES AND WILL BUILD US A NICE QUILTING AREA, LOTS OF WINDOWS, WARM IN WINTER. COOL IN SUMMER. KITCHEN FACILITIES ETC.

WE DON'T JUST QUILT, WE ENJOY BEING TOGETHER. WE ATTEND QUILT SHOWS, MEET AT MEMBERS' HOUSES FOR SWIMMING, LUNCHING AND PARTYING. CHRISTMAS ALWAYS HAPPENS AT THE "FUNNY FARM". WE EXCHANGE GIFTS, DISCLOSE OUR PAST SECRET PAL, DRAW NAMES FOR A NEW ONE, EAT, SING, CHAT AND JUST HAVE A MERRY TIME. AS A SPECIAL TREAT TO THE CAPTIVE AUDIENCE THE HOSTESS LETS THE GROUP WATCH VIDEOS OF, HER GRANDCHILDREN!! IF THE WEATHER HAS BEEN A LITTLE WET SOME-CARS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE MIRED DOWN! (RIGHT GEMMA , MARIE?)

AS A GROUP WE HAVE CURTAINED THE ACT IVITY HOUSE , COVERED THE BINGO BOARD, MADE BIBS ON SEVERA L OCCASIONS FOR NURSI NG HOMES, GARMENTS FOR ADULT 1 ST COMMUNIONS A ND CONFIRMATIONS, A BANNER FOR RENEW AND SPECIAL QU ILTS FOR SPECIAL DONATIONS ETC . PRIESTS IN SOUTH AMEAICA AND INDIA BENFIT FROM PERSONAL DONATIONS FROM TIME TO TIME.

OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE MADE MANY QUILTS WHICH HAVE BEEN RAFFLED AT THE FALL BAZAAR. WE ARE PROUD AND HAPPY TO SAY WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE OVER $20,000.00 TO HOLY CROSS CHURCH WITH THE WONDERFUL COOPERATION OF THE PARISH.

WE CONSIDER OURSELVES SISTERS IN MIND AND HEART. SOME CONSIDER OUR MEETINGS THERAPY. WE TRY TO SOLVE THE WORLDS' PROBLEMS AS WELL AS OUR OWN. WE PLAY AND PRAY TOGETHER AND FIND  JOY IN OUR  SHARING.

IF YOU HAPPEN TO PASS THE ACTIVITY HOUSE ON A THURSDAY MORNING AND SMELL COFFEE AND HEAR LOTS OF CHATTER YOU'LL KNOW THE MEETING IS IN SESSION!
